5 Things You Didn’t Know About Child Support in NC

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Child Support in NC

  1. No written or verbal agreement of parents can prevent a judge from ordering child support.
  2. The payment of child support has nothing to do with parental visitation rights, and a parent can’t legally “punish” the other parent for failing to pay it when he or she has the right to visitation by court order or written agreement.
  3. Grandparents can be liable for child support when one or both of the parents are minors.
  4. Child support may still be required when parents share custody on a 50/50 basis if one of the parent earns more than the other or pays certain additional expenses such as daycare or health insurance.
  5. The court may calculate child support based on what a parent is capable of earning if he or she refuses to seek or accept gainful employment.
